The
ministers in a meeting of 30 October 2002 approved the establishment of
the Cabinet Committee on National Service which was chaired by the
Minister of Defence. The committee was to analyse matters pertaining to
law, curriculum, infrastructure and financial allocation needed in the
implementation of the National Service Programme.
The targeted group for this programme are teenagers born in 1986 or those 18 years of age in 2004.
It
is estimated that a total of 450,000 teenagers fall in this category and
expect to participate in the National Service Programme. However, due
to the inadequacy and insufficiency of the infrastructure, as a start
only 84,000 teenagers will be selected to participate in this programme.
