In 1912 - FL was established as part of FIAT's lubricant division with the aim of manufacturing "first fill" lubricants for all FIAT vehicles.

in 2000 - FL opened a new commercial branch in Argentina. Soon, FL left Fiat Group and re-introduced itself as FL Selenia. It was acquired by Doughty Hanson & Co., an independent private equity fund management company, in a leveraged buy-out transaction. 

In December of the same year, FL Selenia purchased Viscosity oil, an American company that owned a very important transmission oil additive. This allowed FL Selenia to become a world leader in the manufacturing of lubricants for the agricultural industry.
 
PETRONAS Lubricants International (PLI) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of PETRONAS, the national oil corporation of Malaysia. Fully established in 2008, PLI is the union of two respectable lubricant and functional fluids companies – FL Selenia and PETRONAS' own Lubricant Unit. As a result, this has sparked off a new organisation that is structured and focused on offering the best lubricants and functional fluids to the world.
